Hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathies (abbreviated to HSAN) are a group of genetic disorders characterized by widespread sensory dysfunction with varying degrees of autonomic involvement. They are the result of different genetic mutations that affect the development or survival of sensory and autonomic nerves. HSANs are characterized into different sub-types based on the specific gene mutation and/or their clinically distinct characteristics (also known as phenotype).
Diagnosing which type of HSAN the patient has is important in providing the appropriate genetic testing and counseling as well as implementing optimal treatment strategies.
Below is a summary of the most types of HSAN, the nomenclature and their pattern of inheritance.
